Refrigerated Air Dryer

Refrigerated Air Dryer

A refrigerated air dryer is a device used in compressed air systems to remove moisture from the compressed air stream. Moisture in compressed air can cause corrosion in pipes and equipment, freeze in downstream applications, and negatively impact the quality of compressed air for various industrial processes. Refrigerated air dryers work by cooling the compressed air to lower its dew point, causing moisture to condense out of the air stream.

Here's how a typical refrigerated air dryer operates:

  1. Compression: Compressed air, containing moisture, enters the air dryer from the compressor.

  2. Pre-cooling: The incoming warm compressed air first passes through a heat exchanger where it is pre-cooled by outgoing cold air. This helps to reduce the load on the refrigeration system.

  3. Refrigeration: The pre-cooled air then enters the refrigeration system where it is further cooled to a temperature near its dew point. This causes the moisture in the air to condense into liquid water, which is then drained out of the system.

  4. Post-cooling: After the moisture is removed, the air is post-cooled by the outgoing cold air to further lower its temperature.

  5. Drainage: The liquid water that has condensed out of the air is collected and drained from the system to prevent it from re-entering the compressed air stream.

  6. Final drying: The air, now significantly drier, exits the air dryer and enters the compressed air system for various applications.

Refrigerated air dryers are commonly used in industrial settings where a consistent supply of dry compressed air is essential for processes such as pneumatic tools, spray painting, and instrumentation. They are relatively energy-efficient compared to other types of air dryers and are suitable for a wide range of operating conditions.
